Does insurance cover Lasik operation?

Answered By Lanny Frankel, Editor

Since LASIK surgery is not a cosmetic surgical procedure, it is considered to be as an elective surgery. Such surgeries are covered mostly in Asian and European countries. However, most insurance policies in U.S., Canada and Latin America do not cover this procedure. Furthermore, not even Medicare will cover it.

However, it is probable that the rate for LASIK is deductible in the U.S. federal taxes. Therefore, before taking the procedure, check if it can be considered as deductible health expense.
